Cursor speed (DPI) setup on your Contour Rollermouse Red wireless trackpad

Cursor speed (DPI) setup on your Contour Rollermouse Red wireless trackpad

The cursor speed of your Contour Rollermouse Red trackpad wireless determines how fast the mouse cursor moves across your screen. By choosing the right DPI setting, you work more accurately and with less hand and arm movement. In this article, you'll learn how to adjust the cursor speed step by step.

What is DPI?

DPI stands for dots per inch, the number of pixels your cursor moves per centimeter you move the rollerbar. The higher the DPI number, the faster and farther the cursor responds to a small movement. Your RollerMouse has ten speed settings, from 600 DPI (slow) to 2800 DPI (fast).

Which setting works best depends on personal preference, your screen size, and the type of work you do. Working with multiple monitors or an ultrawide screen? Then a higher DPI helps you move between screens more quickly.

Changing cursor speed

  1. Find the Cursor Speed button (button B) on your RollerMouse.
  2. Press the button to scroll through the speed settings. The LED lights show which setting you're at.
  3. Keep pressing until you reach the desired speed. The cursor responds immediately to the new setting.

The steps range from low to high: 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, 2400, 2800 DPI.

Reading speed and battery level

By pressing the Cursor Speed button once briefly, you'll see two things in succession:

  1. First the current cursor speed (DPI setting)
  2. Then the battery level (100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, or 20%)

Does the middle LED light start blinking red? Then your battery is almost empty and it's time to recharge. In that case, connect the charging cable to your RollerMouse and a USB port on your computer. Charging takes about 6 hours and you can continue working while charging.

Tips for choosing the right speed

  • Do you work a lot with graphics or detail work in spreadsheets? Try a lower DPI (600-1200) for more precision
  • Do you have multiple monitors or a large screen? Higher DPI (1800-2800) reduces the distance your rollerbar needs to travel
  • Feeling wrist strain? A slightly higher DPI helps you achieve more cursor range with smaller movements
  • Start with a middle setting (1400-1600 DPI) and adjust based on what feels comfortable

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which DPI is currently active? Press the Cursor Speed button once. The LED lights show the current setting, followed by the battery level.

Can I set a different DPI per application? Not on the RollerMouse itself, but with the free Contour Design driver you can apply further customization. Download it from contourdesign.com/drivers.

How long does the battery last? With average daily use, the battery lasts up to 3 months per charge. Full charging takes approximately 6 hours, and you can continue using the RollerMouse while it charges.

My cursor responds slowly or irregularly, is that due to DPI? Not necessarily. First check your battery level (press Cursor Speed once) and make sure the connection is stable. High DPIs don't require extra battery, so that's rarely the cause. Still not working? Reinstall the Contour Design driver.
